One of my favorite channels to watch is ID, Investigation Discovery which is an sister channel to the Discovery Channel, which in turn is an subsidiary of Viacom. Nonetheless, this week and last week, the channel has been showing none stop commercials about the San Antonio four. For those of you who don’t know, the San Antonio four are four women, all of whom were openly gay. Two girls they baby sat made false accusations about the four women raping them. The news received wide spread attention as the media came down on them hard especially since they were lesbian.
In the year 2016 and as it comes to a close to an end, the LGBT community has been through so much through the decades, and sometimes we forget how hard we had it. There are people who don’t even know who Matthew Shepard is. Really! How can you not know who he is! Regardless, this incident of the San Antonio women happened around 1994, an time when I was in Killeen, and during an time when there was wide spread prejudice against homosexuals.
The four were actually able to be released from prison in 2013 when one of the girls recanted her statement, along with other information looked over by the courts. Rosie O’ Donnell is even promoting this documentary to show what still goes on in the world: prosecution of gays.
I will be tuning in this Saturday to watch the documentary, and I will be doing an follow up article to discuss more about it. I’m sure it’s going to be good because the ratings and reviews on Rotten Tomatoes gives the film an 100% rating.
